Biography

Jo Hume portrait

I began teaching art in 1974 in a Derbyshire comprehensive school. After moving house to North Yorkshire and starting a family I resumed my art teaching career with the Open College of the Arts, Harrogate, and later Carmel Comprehensive School in Darlington. We moved to Northumberland in 1985, and I taught art at Coquet High School in Amble, then as Head of Art at Bedlingtonshire High School in 1990.

After studying first a Certificate in Art Therapy in Edinburgh in 1997, I tackled a M.Phil. research thesis at Newcastle University entitled ‘The Contribution of Art Therapy to Learning in Art’, through which I pursued my passionate interest in young children’s artistic and emotional development. Since 1998 I have been working as a self-employed art education consultant and trainer.

I am married and have two grown up children, and now three fabulous grandchildren! I am a keen gardener and hill walker but my studio is where I am most content, with paint, canvas and my favourite music.
